Plantation Morning Glory
By: Teresa King
Chapter One
Along side the Mississippi
river in March of 1861 on a Plantation called Morning Glory, Jennifer Spring
and her mother were in a full fledged argument.
"No, I won't!" Jennifer defied her mother, blue eyes flashing.
Lucille looked at her daughter in exasperation. "It is the way of
our society,
Jennifer.
You must marry before Caroline, and that is that." Lucille placed
the book she had in her
hand back on the vast bookshelf where it belonged. Then turned back
to her stubborn daughter. "Your sister will not be married until
you are and that is my final word."
"But, mother. We don't have the finances for a dowry for two of us.
And, if you think I have a better chance of marrying into money than Caroline
does, I truly think you should take a second look. She is prettier
than me by far. And, further more, Mother, she has all the proper
graces along with her sweet disposition to catch any man she sets her cap
on." Jennifer flicked lint off her aging frock, then looked
at her mother, "Besides, that is old fashioned thinking. More and
more younger daughters are being wed first nowadays."
"Young lady, that well may be, but not in this family. You
have your own looks and you have plenty of character and I
am not going to leave you on the shelf without a husband." Lucille
tugged at her own blond, just barely turning gray hair, while her face
clouded with indiscernible emotions. She wasn't really angry
at her daughter, and she knew Jennifer had a point.
Jennifer took after her late husband's family, while Caroline took after
her own. She scrutinized her daughter. She was too tall for what
was acceptable. Her hair was a golden brown and not in the current demand
that her younger daughter's curly blond hair was. Yes, as she looked
her oldest daughter over she knew that it would be better to pay for the
coming out ball for her younger daughter, but she was not going to have
her oldest daughter shamed.
Lucille had been born and raised in England a daughter of the Duke of Winchester.
From a wee tot she had been taught protocol and etiquette, and she knew
what was acceptable and what was not acceptable to be accepted in the current
society, yet, much of the old ways had clung to her like chewed gum
stuck in hair.
"Don't you worry, honey, when you marry a man with money, your sister can
have a ball. The only other hope I will have is if your grandfather
would let loose of his purse for us." She sighed and pointed to the
calendar. It was Tuesday, near the end of March 1861. "In two
and a half months, Jennifer," Lucille said, " our mortgage will be
due in full. We are almost a year behind in payments, and I have
talked the banker into allowing for the cotton crops to sell" Her mother's
brow furled with worry.
